About

The historic studio of Piero Portaluppi reopens following a two-year restoration and refurbishment project commissioned and led by architect Filippo Taidelli, great-grandson of Piero Portaluppi, and his firm, Filippo Taidelli Architecture (FTA).

Located within one of Portaluppi's most iconic Rationalist buildings in Milan, completed in 1939, the studio originally served as the architect's headquarters and later as the home of the eponymous Foundation, which closed in 2024.

Founded by Filippo Taidelli Architecture and under the curatorial direction of Julia Koropoulos, Studio Portaluppi is a transdisciplinary research platform dedicated to reconnecting architecture with the physical act and culture of making. Through the exploration of materials, craftsmanship, and direct engagement with places and people, Studio Portaluppi cultivates the therapeutic power of imagination. Through exhibitions, workshops, conversations, concerts, site-specific interventions, and public programmes, the platform fosters transdisciplinary dialogue across professions and generations.

Program

C'est l'heure de bien faire — Fall 2026

Studio Portaluppi's cultural programme reflects the people-centred philosophy at the core of Filippo Taidelli's architectural approach: a culture of building rooted in saper fare, therapeutic beauty, and the healing potential of the built environment.

Its inaugural title, C'est l'heure de bien faire (It's time to do things well), carries multiple meanings, evoking both the craftsmanship of making things well and an imperative to act responsibly. The phrase encapsulates the shared ethos of Filippo Taidelli Architecture and Studio Portaluppi, where architecture is understood as both an ethical and a material practice—rooted in imagination and the art of making, and developed through integrated design and human relationships that foster well-being.

The inaugural programme explores the imaginative potential of architecture through a series of interventions centred on touch, sound, sensory memory, and material experience.

Hearing — November 8, 2026

Hearing explores the relationship between sound, memory, and space through a chamber music concert in collaboration with pianist Elena Lasala. The programme features selected excerpts from Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time, 1941), Olivier Messiaen’s masterpiece, performed within the bunker. The performance will be accompanied by a conversation exploring Messiaen’s visionary musical language, which fused spirituality, birdsong, non-Western rhythmic systems, and radical harmonic experimentation.

Touch — January 2027

Touch begins with an archival research project developed in collaboration with Francesco Marsotto, dedicated to identifying and mapping the over 400 marble pieces that compose Portaluppi’s original meeting-room floor. Preserving traces of multiple territories and temporalities, the project reveals a tangible cartography of materials, geographies, histories, and narratives.The cultural programme will unfold through events, presentations, conversations, performances, workshops, and educational activities. Spaces

Two principles guided FTA’s intervention: dissolving the boundary between inside and outside, and the playful reinterpretation of tradition.

A Rediscovered Garden

Bringing the outside in is a recurring theme throughout FTA’s architecture. Here, it takes shape through the introduction of a large pivoting opening in the main atrium, creating an almost seamless continuity between the interior spaces and the courtyard.

Play as a Bridge Between Tradition and Contemporary Practice

An almost imperceptible intervention, achieved through the playful reinterpretation of original details and materials, allows the historic fabric to accommodate contemporary needs and new ways of inhabiting the space.The entrance hall, meeting room, and studio—the building’s three principal spaces—are unified by an underlying geometric grid that materialises across the ceiling in a refined composition of orthogonal lines.
